Who We Are
My name is Melissa, and I was born in the Dominican Republic. Although I came from poverty and had to walk miles to get to school, my life felt incredibly rich. I spent most of my childhood exploring the forest, climbing trees, and eating mangos, basking in a sense of freedom.
Moving to New York at the age of ten was the beginning of a new chapter in my life. Nine years later, giving birth to my son Nathaniel was a crucial turning point as I became a mother and, unfortunately, also a victim of Domestic Violence. I’ve always been a formidable presence with magnetic energy, a gift for leadership, and resilience. However, through the experience of Domestic Violence, I lost my sense of self. Imprisoned by my situation, I felt defeated, crippled by fear, and unworthy.
This was one of the most crucial battles of my life, and I refused to lose. I fought for my mental freedom and reclaimed my power. Overcoming many challenges, I realized the transformative impact of resilience. I discovered self-love and used it as a guide to reconcile with happiness. A passion ignited within me to create Colors in the Dark, an organization that uses art as a form of healing and transformation. We provide a supportive space for women to rise and flourish.
